About Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day was first linked to romantic love in the high middle ages, in association with Geoffrey Chaucer. The occasion morphed into a day where lovers expressed their love for each other in 18th Century England, when flowers, candy and greeting cards – now called Valentines – were exchanged. Nowadays, most Valentines are mass marketed.

Today Valentine's Day is when children exchange Valentines – many schools make an event of it, and hold Valentine's Day parties. Adults send flowers or candy to their loved ones, and enjoy a romantic dinner.

In the corporate world, Valentine's Day e-cards can be sent to current or future prospects; these can be personalized and tailored to each client, and to your business itself. The card can be a simple reflection on past association (thank you for your business in 2014 so far) or a hope to hear more from them in the future. Of course, you can always send a combination of both.

In other cultures, Valentine's Day is still a celebration of love. In China, the day is called “lovers’ festival” and flowers and/or chocolates are exchanged. “Friends Day” is the corresponding day for Estonia and Finland, when friendship is more celebrated than love.

Cupid, usually depicted as a small child with wings, holding a bow and arrow, is commonly associated with Valentine's Day. It is said that when one falls instantly in love with someone else, they’ve been hit by cupid’s arrow.

Chocolates in heart-shaped boxes are not the only confectionary available during Valentine's Day either. There are cinnamon hearts and heart-shaped lollipops; many large candy companies also sell Valentine's Day specialty treats during this time of the year.

Valentine's Day may be more famous as a time for couples to show their love for each other, but it is an excellent opportunity for businesses to keep in touch with their clients using Valentine's Day corporate e-cards.
