About Independence Day (Fourth of July)

On July 4, 1776, the United States of America declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain; and thus began the annual holiday known as the 4th of July, or Independence Day.

Many different events are associated with this summertime holiday, from barbecues and picnics to family reunions and fairs. Fireworks are also a familiar occurrence, as well as parades and carnivals. From small towns to larger cities, red, white and blue streamers and other decorations adorn streets, businesses and parks; songs are sung, with of course the most common being the Star-Spangled Banner.

In 2009, New York City boasted the largest fireworks display in the country, with over 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploded. Other large displays include Chicago on Lake Michigan, San Diego over Mission Bay, Boston on the Charles River, St. Louis on the Mississippi River, San Francisco over the San Francisco Bay and the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Many special events across the nation occur on July 4, including Macy’s fireworks which are held over the Hudson River. For many years, the fireworks display was over East River in New York City, but returned to the river in 2009 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s exploration of the river.

In Washington, D.C., at the National Mall, A Capitol Fourth is held, which draws more than half a million people annually. This concert has showcased many popular bands and artists, with the guests changing each year. The event has been hosted by Tom Bergeron since 2012.

This 4th of July, show your national spirit and strengthen your relationship with customers by sending a Fourth of July business e-card!
