Canada Day occurs on July 1 and marks the unification of three colonies into a single country, called Canada, under the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day (it was changed to Canada Day in 1982), it commemorates the joining of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada into a federation of four provinces. Common celebrations include fireworks displays, concerts, barbecues and air shows.
Cities and towns are festooned with red and white, and many people paint red maple leaves on their faces or wear Canadian flags as an accessory. Red and white is the colour of choice, and many people exclusively wear those colours on Canada Day.
Some of the larger events occur in Ottawa, in the Nation’s capital. Many concerts happen at this venue, with well-known artists being invited each year. A fireworks display can be enjoyed the evening of July 1, which appears behind the Peace Tower.
In Victoria, B.C., where British Columbia’s Parliament buildings stand, festivities also occur on Canada Day. Concerts are also a major draw on this day, plus much cake and other festival-type events.
Canada Day, especially when it occurs on a Friday, Saturday, Sunday or Monday (to create a long weekend), are an excellent celebration to the start of summer and a perfect time for family get-togethers. Reunions, barbecues and other parties abound.
Oh Canada is one of the most common songs to be heard on Canada Day, and many national historic sites hold special events as well. Some of these include the Canada Day events at Barkerville, British Columbia, and at the Citadel in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Celebrate the red and white with your customers and clients and send out Happy Canada Day business e-cards this July 1!
